Questions We Hear a Lot

Where do you have hikes?

Based in San Luis Obispo County, California, we stick to the central coast. Most of our hikes are in SLO but we also lead hikes as far as Pinnacles National Park, Big Sur, and the Gaviota/Santa Barbara area.

When do you have hikes?

Like most of our members, our volunteer hike leaders have lives and jobs. That means we’re sensitive to working people’s schedules and schedule a variety of weekday and weekend hikes, both mornings and afternoons. We aim to host 2–4 hikes per month, depending on seasonal weather and leader availability. Check our calendar at Meetup for the current schedule.

Do you charge a fee?

No. We accept donations by cash and Venmo, but anyone who adheres to our policy is welcome at no cost. Meetup is also free to join, although they have paid tiers.

How hard are your hikes?

“Hard” is hard to define. We organize hikes for a variety of skill levels, from beach walks to five-milers up and down the local hills. Distances are about 3–6 miles for most hikes and most elevation gain ranges from 200' to 1500'.

What if I fall behind?

No two people hike at the same speed, and our groups of 10 or more hikers almost always spread into groups along the trail. That’s why we have co-leaders who “sweep,” or stay towards the back to guide people who move at a more leisurely pace. We’re here to enjoy ourselves, not march at an unbearable pace.

How long are your hikes?

Our day hikes last around 1–4 hours. Based on past experience we usually announce in advance how long a hike will take — especially if they’re time-sensitive, like our sunset walks. However some factors are beyond our control. Weather, trail closures, or a group moving at an unexpected pace can change our plans on the go.

How are you liable for my safety?

Frankly, we’re not. Our leaders are volunteers who know the trails and enjoy showing people around. We try to lead you along the safest routes, don’t lead people places we’ve never hiked before, and avoid unnecessary risks. However, your safety is your responsibility.

What is Meetup?

Meetup is a service we use for our calendar of events. In their words: “Whatever your interest, from hiking and reading to networking and skill sharing, there are thousands of people who share it on Meetup. Events are happening every day—sign up to join the fun.” Learn more.
