Pismo Preserve Panhandle Trail
The Panhandle Trail gives the most ocean views of any trail in Pismo Preserve. Our out-and-back route ascends steadily — constant but not steep — as it takes the northwest section of the Discovery Trail. A little more than one mile from the trailhead it branches off onto the Panhandle Trail itself.
From there the single-file path meanders through oak groves, which are a welcome respite on warm days, and climbs the hill with a series of switchbacks. Emerging from the trees, the trail flattens out with good views of Dinosaur Caves Park. Before long it reaches a picnic table among more oaks. This is a scenic stop for those who choose not to make the last steep push to the Avila Overlook.
A short but steep hike beyond that takes us to the real overlook: unrestricted views of the ocean to the west and foothills around SLO to the east — weather permitting. We have run into thick fog that obscures our views, as well as marine layers that blanked the ocean but leave the boundless sky open.
In addition to the most views, this is also our longest regular hike at Pismo Preserve: About five miles with an elevation gain of 800'. Download the official LCSLO trail map (PDF)
