Trail Challenge
Starting from a residential area at El Portal Drive (which often confuses newcomers as it looks like a private driveway), the trail immediately tests hikers with a steep ascent. The unmaintained route shows significant erosion on its eastern half - this isn't just steep, it's technical. The ridge's elevation gain is concentrated in the first mile and a half, rewarding effort with some of the most dramatic coastal views in the area.
Notable Features
The trail has earned local fame for two distinct features:
- Hilltop swings nestled under oak trees near the cell towers
- "Booty hill" is a notoriously steep descent toward Pirate's Cove that makes many hikers appreciate trekking poles
Critical Trail Sections
- Initial Climb
- Sharp ascent from El Portal Drive
- Watch for Goat Trail junction — do not take this short, steep side trail

- Ridge Top
- Pass low cell towers kept close to the hillside
- Popular swing area offers break point and photo opportunity
- Views span from San Luis Bay to Shell Beach
- Booty Hill Descent
- Most technical section of trail
- Slippery even in dry conditions
- Tell people there's no shame in pausing to "take in the view"
- Dramatic ocean panorama in evening light

- Pleasant walkway adjacent to Bluff Drive
- Good chance for group conversation
- Returns to El Portal Drive
Weather Considerations
The trail sits exposed to coastal weather:
- Morning fog common in spring/early summer
- September brings hottest conditions
- Extra water needed above 70°F
- Trail becomes particularly challenging after rains
